As we all become adults on this weird, wacky journey called life, we learn new things every day. At Wake Forest, you’re certain to learn more than at any other college — and I’m not talking about in the classroom.
Here’s a list I’ve compiled of everything I’ve learned in my few short weeks at Wake Forest.
Darty: v. To party during the day. Not to be confused with dudying (studying during the day) or dleeping (sleeping during the day.) “Are you going to that darty?” “Nah, my calc professor just assigned another math lab.”
Doing Laundry: v. To wash three pairs of colored J. Crew shorts, a Vineyard Vines t-shirt and a button-down shirt in three separate loads. Be sure to put a dryer sheet in the washing machine where the fabric softener goes, and use three different dryers when only four of them work. “Why are you doing laundry? It’s two in the morning.”
The Pit: n. A buffet-style cafeteria where every station is closed, exactly when you’re hungry. “I would really like some Pit pasta.” “Sorry, we’re closed.”
Coffee: n. The savior of my life. The only way to survive an 8 a.m. class. “Starbucks for coffee… again? That’s the 12th time this week!”
“Closer” by the Chainsmokers: n. The only song you will ever hear when walking past Benson. “We ain’t ever getting older? But ‘Closer’ by the Chainsmokers is getting old!”
Showering: v. To overheat, pass out, hit your head on the door and get a concussion like my roommate Alison. “Alison, are you okay?” “Yeah, I was just showering, and then I got a concussion.”
Donuts in the Lounge: n. As with pizza in the lounge, donuts in the lounge from 8-10 p.m. usually means donuts/pizza in the lounge from 8-8:03 p.m. “Donuts in the lounge from 8-10 p.m. everyone! Wait… they’re already gone?”
The Honor Code: n. God’s hidden Eleventh Commandment. If broken, do not pass go, do not collect $200, go straight to jail. Your life is over. “Under the Honor Code, how much chocolate milk was consumed in this room last night!”
Aleks: n. The bane of my existence; Aleks doesn’t want you to win. “There’s no way I’m going to pass my Aleks final assessment. I’ve only mastered 15 topics this week!”
Mother So Dear: n. I don’t actually quite know what this means, but it’s a nickname for Wake Forest. “I love Mother So Dear.”
Demon Deacon: n. ?????? What? “I still don’t know what a Demon Deacon is.”
Study Break: n. Take one after writing your intro to a paper, reading a paragraph from your textbook or even attempting to take your paper and textbook out of your bookbag. Could be a nap, an episode of your favorite show or just going to get food. “I managed to find a pencil, but that was a lot of work. I think it’s time for a study break.”
