Executive Reports

President Danny Reeves successfully passed a proposal last week that was seen as positive  among officers and the Vice President. Also, Wake Forest was upgraded to a gold level of sustainability on campus, as we were previously silver.

Speaker of the House Will Hargrove is meeting with someone to make changes to Sakai. She will come to Senate next week. He is also reaching out to Campus Police and Transportation about coming to senate to speak.

Treasurer Sydney Packard is working with Peter Reeves, who works with “dry campus” trying to tackle Senior 5th. An idea proposed to combat this activity was that seniors sign a pledge to not participate an in return, they will get a free t-shirt that commemorates their senior year. This is the first time the administration has proposed incentivizing students to not participate.

Secretary Maia Kennedy is working with Student Union on Homecoming elections, which will take place from October 9 to November 4. This year, there will only be one round of elections rather than two. Then, a 3rd party committee will review the nominations/votes and everyone will vote for king and queen on October 30th.

Chief of Staff Daniel Oberti was not in attendance and had nothing to report.

Staff Advisor Tim Wilkinson also addressed plans to decrease participation in Senior 5th. He will be present in the tailgate areas making sure everyone stays safe. He also encourages students to make plans with their friends and organizations on how to best stay safe during mountain weekend. He reported that fewer students have gone to the hospital this year than at this point last year (79 people vs. 98 people).  

Committee Reports

Academic Committee is following up with athletes and students about the Major and Minor fair via survey. They hope to have a sign next year, as well as co-sponsor another tabling event for student athletes on a different academic focus. This spring, they are hoping to have a career night alternative for underclassmen that would include round table discussions, student panels, and would incorporate student athletes.

Campus Life Committee is planning a freshmen cookout. They are also planning leadership talks with younger kids in local area and are looking for volunteers. They reminded the Senate that Project Pumpkin coming up.

Diversity and Inclusion Committee continues to plan the Women and Men of Color dinners with the Intercultural Center coming up in November.

Judiciary Committee is working on implementing an Independent Clections Committee and is working toward making alcohol policy revisions.

Physical Planning Committee is working with the gym to monitor the music that plays in the gym as well as the volume of the music. They also are working to give Tour Guides more updates on Deacon Dining. They continue to plan the trip to the Asian Market in Greensboro.

They are working with Campus Police to increase safety in the sophomore parking lot. Committee members will be going on a walk-through of the parking lot at night with Chief of Police, who will hopefully speak at Senate. Their hope is to add more lights or do whatever is necessary to make that lot feel safer. Additionally, Campus Kitchen has requested a parking spot reserved for their truck at all times to load and unload items, as well as park permanently. The administration was not in favor of this idea, so the committee plans to write a resolution. Finally, the committee is planning a sustainability week.

Public Relations Committee is working to complete their capital funding request.

Student Organizations Council is meeting with Voices and Chi Alpha Christian fellowship.

New Business

A bill was passed to give Student Government the authority to use Google Forms as a means to collect information. Additionally, they can alter their agenda to accommodate guest speakers, and guest speakers do not have to be approved by a vote from the Senate.  

A bill was passed to allow Student Government to vote on statutory changes the same day they are debated and discussed.

A bill presented by Sydney Packard was passed about SPAC.

Constituent Concerns

The gate to sophomore lot never locks which has caused safety concerns. The chocolate milk in the Pit is not good and smells bad.

Announcements

Fall Fest will be on the lower quad from 5-8 pm this Friday and the theme is CarniFall. Birdies for Bear charity golf tournament is Friday November 2nd.
