The Wyndham Championship concluded at Sedgefield Country Club of Greensboro on Sunday, Aug. 23 as Davis Love III, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, shot a final round 64 (-6) to edge the rest of the field and win the last tournament of the 2015 regular tour schedule. Love III was consistent throughout the week, shooting scores of 64, 66, 69 and 64.
Love III was not the only player with North Carolina roots. Four Wake Forest graduates saw action at Wyndham this weekend, one of which may come as a surprise to some. Chris Paul left the realm of the basketball court to play in the pro-am on Wednesday, Aug. 19 with Tiger Woods, one of the most accomplished golfers of all time. Paul and Woods have been friends for a number of years, and according to Paul he “would have never been introduced to the game or been as big a fan of the game if not for [Woods].” Moreover, Paul considers the opportunity to talk trash and play a round of golf with Woods as “truly a once in a lifetime chance.”
Three other former Demon Deacons competed in the tournament as well. Bill Haas (’04) and Webb Simpson (’08) finished the tournament inside the top 10. Haas fired a final round of 67 as Simpson closed out the tournament with a final round of 68.
One of the most notable performances from the week at the Wyndham came from Wake Forest head golf coach Jerry Haas, who was competing in his first PGA tour event in more than 15 years. His first four holes attracted the support of Wake Forest fans attending the tournament, birdieing three of his first four holes. If one followed Haas throughout the day, one could have heard a number of “Go Deacs” chants. Despite his hot start, Coach Hass ultimately squandered down the stretch and missed the cut.
Woods was also in contention for most of the week but faltered down the stretch on Sunday. Woods, who hasn’t won a tournament in more than a year, will have to wait quite some time before he gets another chance out on the course.
This week, the Fedex Cup Playoffs begins as the top 125 points getters on the season will take their talents to Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J.
