Wake Forest has been busy in the opening weeks of school with intriguing speakers and panels, copious amount of work to be done and also with various athletic contests.

The beginning of the school year has been packed with many games and opportunities for students to support their classmates and friends.

Last weekend, Wake Forest celebrated three huge wins: football beat Duke, women’s soccer beat Buffalo and men’s soccer beat Virginia.

This momentum has continued with a field hockey win on Sept. 13 and a women’s volleyball win on Sept. 14.

These athletic accomplishments have given the students something to rally around. After the trifecta of wins on Sept. 10, students rolled the quad for the first time this year. The quad was covered with numerous rolls of toilet paper serving as a reminder of victory for the following days.

Students took to Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to share their excitement about the Demon Deacons’ wins. Students were eager to share the fact that Wake Forest not only beat rival Duke, but won in two other contests as well.

Although students are incredibly busy, they still took the time to watch the different games and cheer on their fellow classmates.

Students do not often roll the quad, so last weekend’s three victories show how invested students can be in different sports. The victories that Wake Forest has recently enjoyed are giving the student body something to rally around.

After some disappointing losses last year, this change of pace is needed to lift the spirits around campus. There were few times last year when students rolled the quad or even acknowledged wins, so this change will hopefully set the tone for the year.

Athletes do not often get the recognition they deserve, so this change in attitude is necessary.

Wake Forest athletics unifies the student body and provides a common ground.

We often see students segmented off due to the hectic lives of students and with the many clubs and organizations students are involved in, but one thing that Wake Forest students can come together for are Wake Forest sports.

We, the editors of the Old Gold & Black urge students to continue with this attitude and to watch and support our fellow Demon Deacons.

It is important that we come together as a community to support those who represent our school every time they put their uniform on.
