On Tuesday, Nov. 29, Student Government met in their bimonthly meeting of executive reports, committee reports, bills and resolutions and Constituent concerns.

One of the topics of discussion was a resolution to make Wake Forest a sanctuary campus.

The resolution for a sanctuary campus would not be a law, but an accepted practice to protect every member of the Wake Forest community regardless of their citizenship.

The senate decided to table a decision on the resolution until next semester instead of coming to one earlier this week.

Many constituents present were upset by this move since they were pushing for the resolution to pass.

The senate decided to hold off on the decision until next semester for various reasons, one being the controversial nature of the resolution.

The senate could not decide on whether or not to pass the resolution and no progress was made.

In addition to this, the senate did not feel it had a full understanding of the resolution because of the small time frame between the resolution being brought to the committee and the vote. Because of these, the senate postponed the decision so that it could be more informed on the topic and gain understanding.

Many of the students present were there in hopes of seeing the resolution pass and were upset by the lack of decision.

However, it is important to recognize that the senate did not have adequate time nor information to make its decision and did not want to come up with a rash one — this lack of decision does not mean that the  members of the senate do not care about the issue nor think it is unimportant.

We, the editors of the Old Gold & Black, feel that it is necessary to gather all of the information on any topic or issue before coming to a decision. It is crucial to have all of the information laid out before deciding how to proceed — that is what the senate is doing.

While it is important to act and represent the views of the student body, there is also a need to look at both sides of the argument and listen to what others have to say.

On a controversial issue like this, the senate could not come to a decision in that moment and could not make one that would satisfy the student body.

When we return to school next semester, the senate will address the resolution again after having time to think it over and do research on what a sanctuary campus would mean for Wake Forest.

The senate taking its time to decide does not show their lack of willingness to act but their due diligence.
