After a series of nail-biting games in this year’s NFL Playoffs, the Super Bowl is finally set. The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots will travel to San Francisco to fight for the Lombardi trophy.
The Seahawks
The Seahawks made several drastic changes to their team last offseason, including trading away veteran quarterback Geno Smith and longtime wide receiver DK Metcalf. Many doubted General Manager John Schneider’s decisions, but they have clearly paid dividends.
In free agency, Schneider turned the keys to Seattle’s future over to 27-year-old quarterback Sam Darnold. After a career year with the Vikings, Darnold carried his success to Seattle with a career game in the NFC Championship, making the $100 million deal he signed worth every penny. Additional signings like veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp and edge rusher Demarcus Lawrence helped the Seahawks mightily this season.
The Patriots
On the other side, the Patriots are coming off a 4-13 season, as well as Robert Kraft’s recent firing of head coach Jerod Mayo. To replace Mayo, Kraft hired former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel, who had success coaching the Tennessee Titans but was let go two seasons ago. In just his first season as head coach for New England, Vrabel has completely transformed the Patriots’ defense and led them to the Super Bowl.
The success of the Patriots cannot be discussed without mentioning second-year quarterback Drake Maye’s breakout season. Maye took a huge leap this season with the Patriots, finishing first in Quarterback Rating and among the frontrunners for the MVP. Maye’s elite quarterbacking, combined with the number of excellent signings made by New England in the offseason, set the Patriots up for their first Super Bowl appearance since 2019.
A flashback to 2015
2026 will not be the first time these two teams have matched up in the Super Bowl. In Super XLIX, the two teams, led by legendary quarterbacks Tom Brady and Russell Wilson, faced off in an extremely competitive game decided by one play. Malcolm Butler’s infamous interception on the one-yard line with 20 seconds left is a moment that Patriots fans cherish and Seahawks fans despise. Seattle will look to get revenge for this moment next Sunday.
Potential for an unforgettable game
There are plenty of great players and storylines to look forward to for this game. For one, Seahawks star receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba will face Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Both were drafted in 2023 – only separated by 3 picks – and have transformed into key pieces for their respective teams. Smith-Njigba led the league in receiving yards and made first-team All-Pro, while Gonzalez has been a key part of New England’s stellar defense. Their matchup should be nothing but cinema.
In addition, the two head coaches have defenses ranked in the top 10. Vrabel, a former defensive player himself, has led the New England defense to be formidable against the run, allowing just 3.1 yards per carry during their postseason run. MacDonald has led a terrific defense as well, as the Seahawks excelled at generating pressure while blitzing at a relatively low rate. Seeing how they match up will be something to keep an eye on during this game.
This year’s Super Bowl will have a lot to live up to, considering how the rest of the playoffs have gone. However, the teams have the potential to give fans an unforgettable game.
