After learning about some of the top trends of the past 100 years, it’s obvious that vintage is always in style. There are some very easy ways to bring the looks of the past into modern-day fashion.
Try incorporating the styles of the 1910s, 20s and 30s in your own day-to-day wardrobe without those obnoxious corsets and hobble skirts.
This may come as a bit of a surprise, but the idea of “boho-chic” really originated in the 1910s — though it didn’t really become a thing until much later, in the 60s and 70s.
Along with the bold colors and patterns that were the height of fashion at the time, women also accessorized with lots of beaded jewelry and flashy, “oriental”-style shoes.
So what does this mean for the modern-day fashionista?
Well, if you want to channel the exotic trends of the 1910s, a pair of loose, comfortable harem pants or a flowy skirt in a colorful floral print will serve as a great base when paired with a basic neutral t-shirt and a bright boyfriend cardigan. Finish the look off with a pair of flat, thin sandals and some beaded necklaces and earrings for a wonderful 1910s outfit that is anything but out of style.
The simpler, the better when it comes to 1920s-inspired fashion.
Waistlines were down at the hips, creating a loose, unrestricted look — perfect for the independent woman on the move. Coco Chanel introduced her now-classic style sensibilities in the 20s, making the “French navy” and white-striped T-shirt with a black skirt a staple of fashion that remains popular today. As such, for a great 20s look, the combination of these two elements is key. Sure, flappers are cool and all, but their look isn’t the comfiest.
To really pull off a casual Roaring Twenties, a striped, long-sleeved T-shirt in navy and white, a pair of navy tights, navy knee-length skirt without pleats and a loose drop-waist jacket are perfect. Add layers of pearls and bold cuff bracelets for a strong but feminine effect, and top it all off with black or two-toned kitten heels. Be sure that your accessories give the outfit sparkle!
The 1930s, in terms of fashion, were strikingly similar to the 20s when you get right down to it, mainly because few people had enough money to be constantly following trends.
Instead, they innovated and made do with what they had. One thing to note about the 30s: they were nowhere near as flashy and sparkly as the 20s.
However, unlike the skirts of the 20s, the skirts of the 30s featured hidden pleats to allow for increased movement. Where the colors of the 20s were bold and striking, the 30s were muted and neutral.
For a chic 30s look, pair a black pleated skirt with a white or cream shirt with a Peter Pan collar and a black cardigan. Seal the deal with bright jewelry, dark T-bar shoes and a cloche hat for a distinctly 30s outfit.
