The Wake Forest men’s golf team closed the weekend with a solid win, marking the second consecutive victory and the third win of the season at the Valspar Collegiate during Tuesday’s final round at the Floridian Golf Course.
The Demon Deacons shot a final-round four-over 288 to finish at seven-over, one shot ahead of Georgia Tech.
Round 1
In an event that features eight of the top 30 squads in the country, the No. 10 ranked Demon Deacons looked for a quick start to establish themselves as potential victors. Wake Forest finished the first round in second place at 7-over.
Will Zalatoris finished the opening round tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard after a first round one-under 70, two shots off the lead. Eric Bae shot a two-over 73 and is tied for 15th place. Cameron Young and Lee Detmer each shot a three-over 74 and are tied for 21st place, while Paul McBride is tied for 27th place at four-over.
Round 2
An impressive second round brought the surging Deacons into first place.The Demon Deacons shot a four-under 280 to take a nine-shot lead into the final round of play.
Bae shot the low round of the day, a four-under 67, to move into a tie for first on the individual leaderboard at two-under. Zalatoris is tied for fifth at even par after a second round 72, while Paul McBride shot a 69 on Monday to move into the top 10 at two-over for the tournament.
Detmer shot a second-round 72 and is at four-over. Young shot 74 for the second straight day and is at six-over.
Round 3
Zalatoris and Bae led the Demon Deacons to the title, both posting top-five finishes. Zalatoris was tied for individual runner-up at one-under after a final round 70.
Bae shot a final round 73 to finish the event at even par, tied for fourth place.
Cameron Young had a strong final round, shooting even par 71 to finish at six-over, tied for 25th place. McBride finished tied for 20th place at five-over after a final round 74. Detmer closed out the Deacon lineup, finishing the tournament at 10-over.
Head Coach Jay Haas summed the match up by saying, “It is always nice to win a great event like this against this strong of a field.” Wake Forest’s next event is the 3M Augusta Invitational at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, GA, on April 1-2. One week later, the Masters Tournament will take place at Augusta National in Augusta, GA.
