The spring sports season has begun and the Demon Deacons have gotten off to a hot start.
Wake Forest’s men’s tennis and golf teams are both currently two of the best teams in the country in their respective sports, while baseball is off to a historic start.
Many expected that the men’s tennis team, ranked No. 5 in the country, would struggle this year after losing standout freshman Noah Rubin in 2015.
However, the Deacs, who have already reached the program’s highest national ranking, have already recorded an extremely impressive win over then No. 2 Oklahoma. They also competed valiantly and narrowly lost to the University of Virginia on the road. Virginia has dominated the ACC for years, but in losing by just one match, the Deacs are proving that they will not only be competing for an ACC championship, but that they will likely be in the discussion for a national title.
The men’s golf team, currently ranked No. 2 in the country, will also be competing for a national championship this fall.
After an excellent fall season, in which they won both the Nike Collegiate Invitational and the U.S. Collegiate Championship, the team will look to continue this success in the spring.
The Deacs certainly have the talent to bring home a national championship for Wake Forest, but golf is often extremely unpredictable.
The baseball team, while currently unranked, has gotten off to one of its best starts in years and has the potential to be a serious threat in the ACC. The Deacs are currently 4-0 with a big trip to Southern California looming this weekend. This trip will likely show fans just how good this team can be.
Offensively, the Deacs have enough skill to compete with any team in the country. Led by junior Will Craig, the Deacs should be one of the highest scoring teams in the country. Ultimately, how good this team is will likely come down to their pitching.
If the Deacs can hold their opponents to a reasonable amount of runs, their bats should be good enough to defeat most teams around the country. The Deacs have not made the ACC or NCAA tournaments in many years, but this will likely be the season that finally changes that.
