The Wake Forest women’s soccer team took care of business last week against two ACC rivals, defeating Virginia Tech 2-1 and tying Boston College 0-0.
After allowing a goal in the first six minutes of play against the Hokies, the Demon Deacons were able to pull things together in the first half and score two of their own. Senior Hannah Johnson scored the first goal for Wake Forest on a header assisted by Sierra Sythe from the corner. It was Johnson’s first goal of the season and the eighth in her collegiate career.
Freshman Kylie Maxwell, who has already cemented herself as a cornerstone piece for this program, tallied the second goal of the evening for Wake Forest.
The young forward outran three Hokie defenders to give her team the lead. It was Maxwell’s fourth goal of the season and second in as many consecutive games.
The defense was also strong following the early goal. Despite the continuous opportunities for the Hokies, goalkeeper Valentina Amaral remained steady and made several key stops.
“We worked our way out of [trouble] to take the lead 2-1 and defended with commitment for the rest of the game,” Coach Tony da Luz said. “Val had another great performance and the back four were locked in.”
Heading into Sunday’s contest against the Eagles, the Demon Deacons felt as confident as ever. There is no doubt that this team was on a roll, and their first road matchup in a while would be a great test.
However, despite a terrific defensive showing, the No. 16 Demon Deacons settled for the draw against the now 4-2-4 Boston College Eagles. After dominating opponents with a combined nine goals in their last three games, the Demon Deacons were only able to put up seven total shots in the shutout.
While Boston College played well, the faults within the Wake Forest offense led to the disappointing result. Given plenty of chances with five corner kicks, the Demon Deacons had the opportunity to come out on top with three extra points in the standings.
“Our team did everything to win the game, but we had to settle for a point today,” da Luz said following the tie. “We fought hard, showing grit on the road.”
In a season filled with tremendous expectations, the defending runners-up of last year’s College Cup continue to play exceptional soccer. ACC play will continue for the Demon Deacons as they take on the Duke Blue Devils in Durham this Thursday, Sept. 25.
