Sophomore Caroline Walker has a double major in English and Spanish, has been an involved and innovative leader on campus during her first two years at the university. She has devoted her time, energy and effort to improving the Wake Forest community through Student Government, the Old Gold & Black and the Office of Sustainability.
Walker has been involved in Student Government since freshman year, most recently as the co-chair of the Academic Committee. In this leadership role, she aimed to increase diversity and inclusion in the academic environment and to make the undergraduate academic college a home for all students. She worked on bringing together students and student athletes with the creation of a student athlete video highlighting their athletic and academic work. She co-sponsored the Classics Beyond Whiteness initiative, which highlighted the study of diverse voices within the Classics Department. She also supported the Environmental Program’s establishment of two new environmental majors, which were featured at the Major and Minor Fair that she helped to organize in collaboration with the Office of Academic Advising. She plans to continue her work on increasing inclusion on campus if elected as Secretary.
Walker also brings leadership experience from her role as News Editor of the Old Gold & Black. While News Editor, she worked on increasing transparency and representing a diverse set of voices in news articles and weekly Deacon Profiles highlighting students across campus. She wrote and published articles on the new academic building on Davis Field, the Founders Day convocation and the approval of the two new environmental majors, among many others. Covering everything from student-led initiatives to administrative-level operations and decisions, Walker’s reporting experience has prepared her to represent and advocate for the opinions of a diverse body of students and to communicate with administrators in order to effect change.
Walker has also shown a passion for increasing sustainability on campus through her work for the Office of Sustainability. As the Graphic Design Assistant, she has increased awareness about environmental issues and engaged students in sustainable initiatives and events. Walker’s work includes developing outreach games and boards to educate students about sustainability, planning and marketing events like Earth Month and writing articles highlighting sustainability on campus. She is also a Shift Leader of Compost Crew and has experience engaging students in sustainable action during zero-landfill events aimed at reducing the amount of waste generated and at increasing the level of composting on campus. Her devotion to sustainability is a key tenet in her campaign platform, which emphasizes her hopes of making “the Forest” more green.
In addition to these roles, Walker has demonstrated true Pro Humanitate spirit as an involved member of the campus community. This year, she served as the co-chair of the Marketing Committee for Project Pumpkin and she has also been a member of the Marketing Committee and Decorations Committee for Wake ’N Shake. She is also a member of her sorority Kappa Alpha Theta, RUF and Running Club. With profound engagement with the student body, she believes that she will be a strong representative of the student body’s voice if elected as Secretary.
