Wake Forest field hockey shot up to No. 5 in the rankings this week and added two more wins to their streak, marking another strong week for the Demon Deacons. Their 11-2 record is their best at this point in the season since 2008, when they advanced to the NCAA Semifinals.
On Friday, Wake Forest earned a dominant 9-2 win over Queens University in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
After only scoring one goal in her freshman season, sophomore Sarah Mudd has been on a hot streak of scoring and notched her first career hat trick against the Royals. Junior Mia Schoenbeck also scored three times in the contest, bringing her total to 13 on the year.
Wake Forest dominated possession, firing 24 shots on goal and earning five corners in the matchup.
Junior Faye Janse tallied her third goal of the season, while junior Ava Moore had her first.
Queens responded before the half with a goal to make it 4-1, and managed its second with 12 minutes remaining in the game.
Despite giving up nine goals to Wake Forest’s relentless attack, Queens goalkeeper Madison DeStefano finished the game with an impressive 15 saves.
Wake’s redshirt sophomore Caroline Grebe replaced Ellie Todd in goal for the closing minutes.
“What a great team victory,” Head Coach Jen Averill said postgame. “We’re just continuing to grow our game. Defensively, we’ll do some tidying up, but happy with the result and how this team keeps growing together.”
On Sunday, Wake Forest defeated Delaware, bringing their win total to 11 in a 4-1 win.
Junior Lauren Storey opened the scoring with a penalty stroke earned by Mudd in the second quarter, scoring her 13th goal of the season.
Senior Amelia Frey tallied her first goal of the season — and fourth of her career — in the first half off a rebound from Storey’s shot. She became the 10th Demon Deacon to score this season.
Mudd tallied in the fourth quarter to make it 4-1. Along with Schoenbeck and Storey, Mudd is now ranked in the top 10 in the ACC in goals scored with eight on the season.
The Demon Deacons piled on 17 shots and earned nine penalty corners.
Todd made three total saves but came up with key stops to keep the Blue Hens off the scoreboard until the final seconds. As time expired, Delaware scored its lone goal on a penalty corner.
“I thought it was some of the most beautiful hockey we’ve played all season long,” Averill said. “I love it when we can have different people putting up points.”
The Demon Deacons will return to conference play at home Friday, Oct. 17, at 5 p.m. vs Stanford.
