Laura Horton, a Politics and Communication double major, has devoted her three years at the university to helping the Wake Forest and Winston-Salem communities. She has committed herself to engaging with others through her involvement with Project Pumpkin, Student Advising and Student Government.

During her three years in Student Government, Horton has served on the Judiciary Committee and the Academic Committee, as well as held the position of Secretary. During her time on the Judiciary Committee, she sought to improve the construction of Student Government and make elections less biased by proposing an independent elections commission. During her time on the Academic Committee before going abroad, she strived to learn about students’ academic needs and suggestions for improvement, and helped with the annual Major/Minor Fair. During her time as Secretary, she worked with Student Health Services and Residence Life & Housing to get free condom dispensers in residence halls, which will likely be installed this summer depending on COVID-19 changes. Horton also worked with the Office of Financial Aid and the Financial Sub-Committee of the Affordability Initiative to increase printing allotments for students who receive financial aid, as well as reset parking fines for all students at the beginning of each academic year. She also worked with the bookstore on a pilot study to increase textbook affordability and accessibility for all students which will be implemented for select classes in Fall 2020.

Horton is also involved in Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Alpha Kappa Psi professional business fraternity and the Pre-Law council. She hopes to increase the awareness and efficiency of Student Government, and use her role as President to promote campus and community involvement, physical and mental wellbeing, and accessibility for all students.
