Miles Middleton is a rising senior, a double major in Politics and History, and the current Speaker of the House for Student Government. Over the past few years, Middleton has served as a Title IX liaison, PREPARE Facilitator, Diversity and Inclusion Facilitator and member of the Bias Reporting System Committee.

In addition, Middleton has organized the following campus/community-wide events: the 9/11 Memorial Event at BB&T stadium, the Attorney Benjamin Crump Event, Mental Health Week in 2019 and a voter registration drive for the Winston-Salem Community.

That is why his platform focuses on four pillars: Civic Engagement, Community Activism, Leadership Reform, and Campus Improvements. While these are the main points of Middleton’s platform, he also wants to help address the ongoing pandemic, COVID-19, and the daily impacts it has on every student. In order to accomplish this, Middleton will work alongside the Office of Financial Aid to ensure that there are options and resources for students to pay their tuition and room & board. Moreover, by connecting with the Office of Personal Career and Development with Student Government, Middleton will aid Student Organizations and PanHel members in finding internships and jobs in today’s market.

Middleton’s first pillar is Civic Engagement, in which he wants to expand our relationship with Winston Salem State University and combine our campus organizations together. Furthermore, he aims to promote the spirit of Pro Humanitate off-campus through an increased investment of time in the Winston-Salem community. Lastly, Student Government and its leaders need to engage with Wake Forest Administrators to ensure the reevaluation of our current discussion of diversity on campus.

His second pillar is Community Activism. As the 2020 election is around the corner, he wants to ensure that Wake Forest’s campus is prepared for any response. To do this, Middleton will organize a campus-wide voter registration drive, gather more student input on Community leaders brought to campus, and forge a stronger connection between the SAFE Office, Women’s Center, LGBTQ Center and Intercultural Center.

The third pillar of Middleton’s platform centers on Student Government’s internal and external reform for the greater Wake Forest campus. His campaign would make Student Government the champion of ensuring new voices, opinions and perspectives are being heard throughout our community. He believes that Student Government needs to be the force that connects the students and administration. He will ensure this by making student and administrative leadership more transparent.

Finally, Middleton’s fourth pillar focuses on Campus Improvements, including developing well-versed security initiatives and self-report systems. Over this past semester, as a member of the Bias Reporting System Committee, Middleton has advocated for a revamp of the Bias Reporting System premised on three principles: educational prevention, accountability and transparency.
